To accomplish great things, we must dream as well as act.” ~Anatole France

We all have our “thing”, something we believe in that helps us to be better every day. Unfortunately, though, negative thoughts, laziness, and obstacles tend to muffle that inspiring whisper within us. Our egos preoccupy us with trifles when instead we could be focusing on how to do more with our lives. Here are some effective ways to temper the ego and help you to take action and accomplish more in life:

1. Play the Game

We have a tendency to take ourselves too seriously. This often results in becoming too stiff and unyielding when it comes to changing our plans and adapting to new situations. Being flexible and able to see how our circumstances can serve us is critical to our success. However, we can hardly do this if we are too worried that things aren’t going according to plan. The key here is to play—be light, but strong to take full advantage of whatever life throws you. This isn’t easy. On the contrary, it takes experience and wisdom to know when to stand your ground and when to let things flow. Your life isn’t supposed to be toil, something you trudge through, but a game that you can design to your liking. Everything depends on you and since you’re modeling your existence, you might as well make it a fun one.

2. Purge the Distractions

First, it’s important to know the distinction between what’s truly good for you and what you use as a distraction. This can be tricky. For example, spending two hours on Facebook isn’t very productive, unless it’s part of your job. When we’re trying to distract ourselves, it’s usually because we’re supposed to do something challenging. You can recognize your deflecting strategy with awareness. When you do, focus on the task twice as hard to achieve results and overcome your fears and expectations.

Dedicating some time to yourself and doing what you love will help you recharge and replenish, but if you overdo it, it can become a distraction to accomplishing more.

3. Write Down Ideas to Make Them Count

Our minds are constantly in a bind, always working, chattering and in that noise, good ideas are born, but they can be easily lost. Nurturing the habit of writing down your ideas and thoughts is by far one of the best things you can do. It allows you to remember your creative outbursts, even when you can’t make use of them right away. Some of the most creative people on the planet believe that innovative ideas have a bit of a temper, so they come to you in the most inopportune of moments. This can be when you can’t hold on to them and in the next moment, they’re gone. To prevent valuable ideas from fading away from your memory, have something to write on wherever you go. You can do this on your phone, if you prefer. Find a way to keep your contemplations more permanent, where they can’t be victim of your mischievous mind.

To sum it up, improving ourselves every day is one of the most demanding tasks we face. Overcoming self-imposed boundaries and fear of failure or success is daunting. You sometimes have to wait for a long time to reap the rewards. However, if we want to be the best version of ourselves, giving up is not an option. We can always accomplish more if we set our minds to it, flow with the circumstances of life, purge distractions to focus on what we truly want and make our ideas count.
